Secretary of State Marco Rubio went on the offensive during a TODAY show interview, declaring flatly that Iran can never be allowed to have a nuclear weapon, no exceptions. He didn't hold back on why, pointing to Iran's own record: a radical clerical regime, he said, that brutalizes its own people and has left a trail of carnage across the region. For Rubio, that track record settles the matter entirely, a government like that, in his words, simply cannot be trusted with the world's most dangerous weapon. The comments arrive as Washington and Tehran circle each other ahead of the UN General Assembly, with talks technically on the table but nothing formally scheduled.

Rubio's remarks are the latest reminder that the Trump administration's red line on Iran has not moved an inch, even as diplomatic doors stay cracked open. The warning comes months after US strikes hit Iranian nuclear facilities, part of a broader campaign aimed at crippling Tehran's weapons program before it could reach the finish line. Despite the tough talk, Rubio signaled Washington remains open to engagement, including a potential meeting with Iranian officials in New York, if it can actually move things toward a real resolution. For now, the message from the top US diplomat is unmistakable: Iran's path to a nuclear weapon isn't just discouraged, it's a line that will not be allowed to be crossed.
