Eight of the twelve B-1B Lancer bombers stationed at RAF Fairford have now departed for the United States, with footage showing one of the swing-wing jets flying low over nearby residential streets on its way out. The latest group, three bombers flying as 'MAYAN11' with tanker support from RAF Mildenhall, left the base Sunday morning, following earlier departures that had already begun thinning out what was once one of the largest bomber deployments in recent memory. At its peak in March, Fairford hosted 15 American bombers, 12 B-1Bs and 3 B-52s, after the UK granted access for strikes on Iranian missile sites as part of Operation Epic Fury. It's unclear whether the US plans to send replacement aircraft to keep the base at full strength.

The drawdown comes at a notable moment. Just days earlier, British counter-terrorism police arrested several men near the base over a suspected explosives plot that officials now say may have involved Iran, a scare that briefly put Fairford itself in the headlines for reasons that had nothing to do with its mission. At the same time, Middle East tensions appear to be cooling slightly compared to the peak of the war, even as sporadic strikes and skirmishes continue. Whether this withdrawal reflects a genuine step back from the Iran campaign, a routine rotation, or something tied to the security incident on the ground remains an open question, and one that will likely only be answered by what, if anything, arrives at Fairford next.
