Yemen's Houthi movement says it launched ballistic missiles and drones at Saudi Aramco facilities in Riyadh and the Khurais oil region on Sunday, claiming both strikes hit their targets and sparked large fires. The group framed the attack as direct retaliation, saying Saudi Arabia had carried out 50 air and missile strikes over the preceding 12 hours across six Yemeni governorates, including Sanaa, Al-Jawf, Taiz, Amran, Hajjah, and Saada. Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said the operations 'successfully achieved their objectives,' describing the strikes as precise and the resulting fires as large. Saudi Arabia had not immediately confirmed the attack or its damage at the time of the claim, a familiar pattern in a conflict where Riyadh rarely responds quickly to Houthi strike announcements.

The attack lands squarely within a rapidly escalating war, one that has flared back up just as Yemen's internationally recognized government announced a major new offensive to retake Houthi-held territory nationwide. The Houthis have vowed the Aramco strikes won't be the last, warning they will keep targeting Saudi military bases, troop concentrations, and oil infrastructure until Saudi attacks on Yemen stop and the blockade on the country is lifted. It's a familiar playbook for the group, which has hit Saudi energy infrastructure repeatedly since 2019, but the renewed intensity now comes layered on top of an already active US-Iran conflict, raising the stakes for a region already stretched thin by overlapping wars.
