Syria's Abu al-Duhur Airbase Erupts in Flames After Alleged Israeli Strike

Thick black smoke continues to pour from Syria's Abu al-Duhur military airbase in Idlib hours after a reported Israeli strike, with secondary explosions still rattling the site well into the day. Syrian state television and multiple international outlets, including Reuters and Al Jazeera, reported that eight strikes tore through the runway and storage facilities at the long-dormant base, causing significant material damage. Remarkably, no casualties have been reported despite the scale of the attack, and Israeli officials have so far declined to formally claim responsibility, sticking to their standard policy of ambiguity on strikes inside Syrian territory.

The base had sat largely abandoned since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime in December 2024, its runways and hangars reduced to little more than rubble after years of civil war. This marks the first major attack on the site since Assad's ouster, and it comes at a striking moment — just hours after a Turkish military delegation reportedly visited the airbase to assess plans for rehabilitating its runways. That timing has fueled speculation that the strike was a calculated warning shot aimed squarely at Ankara's growing military footprint in Syria, rather than a response to any threat posed by the dormant facility itself.

The attack lands amid a broader pattern of Israeli operations across Syria since Assad's fall, part of what Israeli officials describe as an ongoing effort to prevent hostile military infrastructure from taking root along the country's northern and southern borders. Damascus has condemned the strikes as a flagrant violation of Syrian sovereignty, while Israel continues to maintain a firm posture that any buildup of advanced military capability near its borders — whether Iranian-linked or otherwise — will not be tolerated. With Turkey-Syria cooperation deepening and reconstruction efforts underway at sites like Abu al-Duhur, the burning wreckage at the airbase stands as a clear signal that Israel intends to police the skies over Syria on its own terms.
