Lebanese President Joseph Aoun made an unannounced, heavily guarded trip to the southern city of Nabatieh on Saturday, September 12, arriving without prior notice and flanked by army chief General Rodolphe Haykal alongside a tight security detail. Video of the visit shows Aoun walking through the streets surrounded by camouflaged soldiers and officials, underscoring just how seriously his team treated the security risk of the trip. Official Lebanese media described the visit as his first wartime trip to the south, and residents who greeted him along the way appeared visibly moved by the show of presidential presence in a city many people had already fled. The choice of Nabatieh was no accident, the city sits just a few kilometers from the Ali al-Taher ridge, a site that has become the epicenter of the latest round of escalation between Israel and Hezbollah.

The visit came just two days after Israeli forces detonated more than 1,100 tonnes of explosives inside underground fortifications on the ridge, an operation Israel said destroyed a central Hezbollah command complex built into the mountain. The blast was powerful enough to register 4.1 on the Richter scale and to be picked up by seismic monitoring agencies well beyond the immediate area, leaving the ground in Nabatieh still trembling with aftershocks by the time Aoun arrived. Israeli strikes across the broader region in the days surrounding the demolition have killed at least 29 people, including 12 members of a single family, according to local reporting. The Lebanese army, which maintains a deployment inside Nabatieh city itself, had already warned days earlier that Israel's actions were threatening to unravel the fragile framework agreement meant to keep the ceasefire intact.

During the visit, Aoun struck a defiant tone even while pledging state support for residents. He told the crowd gathered around him that there would be no new negotiations with Israel at the present time, framing Israeli withdrawal, the return of prisoners and displaced people, and reconstruction as non negotiable national principles Lebanon remains committed to pursuing. He also singled out staff at Nabatieh Governmental Hospital for praise, saying they were risking their lives to keep providing medical care in an area that most residents have already abandoned. The remarks landed just a day after a senior U.S. diplomatic official confirmed that a new round of American brokered talks between Israel and Lebanon, originally scheduled for the coming week, had been pushed back to October, adding a diplomatic edge to an already tense moment on the ground.

Beyond the presidential visit itself, Lebanon's government has been working in parallel to signal that state institutions remain functional despite the mounting damage in the south. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam separately received a delegation from the municipality of Kfar Rumman around the same time, telling them the Council for Development and Reconstruction would soon begin implementing projects once preparatory procedures were finished. Still, uncertainty continues to hang over the region, with one Nabatieh resident telling reporters that no one could guarantee what might happen next given how alarming Israel's recent statements have sounded. As the ceasefire framework strains under the weight of continued strikes and a delayed diplomatic track, Aoun's visit stands as both a gesture of solidarity and a pointed reminder of how fragile the current calm in southern Lebanon truly is.
