NASA Astronauts Begin Critical Spacewalk to Replace ISS Antenna

NASA astronaut Anil Menon and European Space Agency astronaut Sophie Adenot are currently conducting a spacewalk outside the International Space Station to replace a failed Space-to-Ground communications antenna. The planned 6.5-hour excursion began earlier on August 18, 2026, and the pair was nearly three hours into the operation at the time of recent updates. Menon is serving as the lead spacewalker in a red-striped suit, while Adenot wears an unmarked Extravehicular Mobility Unit. The work is taking place on the station’s Z1 truss with support from the Canadarm2 robotic arm operated from inside the laboratory.

The Space-to-Ground antenna is a vital component that enables high-speed communications between the orbiting complex and Mission Control in Houston. Its replacement ensures continued reliable data and voice links essential for daily operations, scientific research, and crew safety. This spacewalk represents another milestone in the ongoing maintenance and assembly of the International Space Station, building on more than two decades of continuous human presence in low Earth orbit. Crew members inside the station are assisting with suit operations and robotic arm control to support the precise external tasks.

Spacewalks remain among the most demanding activities in human spaceflight, requiring meticulous preparation, physical endurance, and real-time problem-solving in the vacuum of space. The current operation involves carefully disconnecting the old antenna, retrieving a spare unit from an external stowage platform, and installing the replacement while managing electrical and data connections. Successful completion will restore full communications capability and demonstrate the continued readiness of the station’s systems.

American leadership in space continues to drive these complex engineering feats. The collaboration with international partners on the ISS showcases both technical excellence and the practical benefits of sustained orbital operations. As the spacewalk progresses, ground teams and the onboard crew remain focused on a safe and efficient outcome that keeps the station fully functional for ongoing research and future missions.
