WASHINGTON — House Speaker Mike Johnson has put an end to renewed speculation over whether President Donald Trump could seek a third term, clarifying that while enthusiasm for Trump’s leadership remains strong, the Constitution sets clear limits.

Speaking to reporters on October 27, Johnson reaffirmed that the 22nd Amendment prohibits any president from serving more than two terms. “I don’t see a way to amend the Constitution,” he said, emphasizing that the president himself understands the restriction. “I think the president knows about the constraints of the Constitution, as much as so many Americans lament that.”

The comments came after Trump’s recent lighthearted remarks aboard Air Force One, where he acknowledged, “It’s pretty clear, I’m not allowed to run. It’s too bad.” The President’s statement effectively ended speculation of a 2028 campaign, even as his supporters continue to circulate “Trump 2028” hats and memes online.

Johnson downplayed the buzz, describing the viral items as Trump’s characteristic humor. “It’s trolling the Democrats,” he said with a smile, adding that the President remains laser-focused on advancing his current-term agenda and sustaining the nation’s economic momentum.

The Speaker also reaffirmed his commitment to Trump’s legislative and policy goals, saying, “We’re not going to take our foot off the gas pedal — we’ve got a great run ahead of us left.”

Political analysts note that Johnson’s remarks reinforce unity within Republican leadership and demonstrate confidence in Trump’s continued political influence without crossing constitutional boundaries.
