CENTCOM Blasts Rogue Sanctioned Tanker for Defying U.S. Iran Blockade

U.S. Central Command disabled the Mozambique-flagged tanker M/T Lavine on July 24 after the vessel repeatedly attempted to breach the American naval blockade around Iran and ignored repeated warnings from U.S. forces. American ships ultimately opened fire into the tanker's engine room, stopping it in its tracks and sending a clear message to anyone considering testing the blockade. The decisive action underscores the seriousness with which the administration is enforcing the maritime restrictions central to the broader Iran ceasefire framework, and it marks one of the most direct enforcement actions taken since the blockade went into effect.

According to open-source ship-tracking group TankerTrackers, the vessel struck by U.S. forces is the very same ship that has also operated under the name M/T Disha, a tanker that has sat under U.S. Treasury sanctions for two years. That vessel has a documented history of ferrying Iranian liquefied petroleum gas to the Houthi militia in Yemen, placing it squarely within the network of sanctioned shipping the United States has been working to shut down. Its attempt to slip past the blockade under a different flag and identity highlights the lengths sanctioned operators are going to in order to keep Iranian energy exports flowing to destabilizing actors in the region.

Despite the dramatic nature of the strike, there was good news for the crew: the Forward Seamen's Union of India confirmed that all 28 Indian seafarers aboard the tanker survived the incident. The safe outcome for the crew stands in contrast to the aggressive posture the vessel's operators took toward U.S. forces, and it will likely fuel further scrutiny of the shipping networks quietly working around international sanctions. As enforcement of the Iran blockade continues, this incident serves as an early test case for how the U.S. military intends to handle vessels that test its resolve.
