In his first television interview as Vice President, J.D. Vance delivered a pointed critique of current U.S. immigration policy, arguing that America must update its approach to reflect 240 years of national evolution. Speaking on CBS's Face the Nation on January 26, 2025, Vance rebutted host Margaret Brennan’s statement that “this is a country founded by immigrants,” asserting that historical founding does not justify contemporary policies he deemed ineffective.

“Just because we were ‘founded by immigrants’ doesn’t mean that 240 years later we have to have the dumbest immigration policy in the world!” Vance said, emphasizing the need for stricter controls and selective entry to protect national security and social stability.

Vance defended Trump administration measures including limiting birthright citizenship for children of undocumented immigrants and empowering ICE to arrest violent criminals near schools. He argued that the United States was founded by both immigrants and settlers, and that no country extends full citizenship rights automatically to children of temporary visitors.

The interview resurfaced recently, drawing attention for Vance’s unfiltered critique. Supporters praised the Vice President’s directness and alignment with the Trump administration’s America First immigration agenda, citing data showing over 10 million encounters at the southern border since 2021. Critics, however, challenged his remarks, noting the historical context of settlers occupying lands claimed by Native Americans.

Vance’s comments reflect ongoing debates about border security, immigration enforcement, and national identity, underscoring the administration’s commitment to reforming policies considered outdated or easily exploited. The Vice President’s remarks signal continued advocacy for rigorous enforcement and structural reform of U.S. immigration law.
