The USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) departed Laem Chabang Port in Thailand on September 6, 2026, wrapping up a five-day port call that gave its roughly 5,000-member crew a rare chance to rest after one of the longest continuous deployments in recent Navy history. Footage of the carrier's departure, filmed from a coastal vantage point, shows the Nimitz-class carrier's deck loaded with aircraft as it eased away from the terminal and back out to open water. The carrier had arrived on September 2 for its first full port stop since leaving San Diego in November 2025, a deployment that by the time of the Thailand visit had stretched to roughly 286 consecutive days at sea, including an extended stint of combat operations in the Middle East under U.S. Central Command.

The visit came after months of reported strain aboard the ship, with crew families and outside observers raising concerns about extended time at sea, supply issues, and morale during the deployment's later stages. Rear Adm. Robert E. Loughran, commander of Carrier Strike Group 3, called the port stop "a well-deserved opportunity" for sailors and Marines to rest and recharge, while also emphasizing what he described as the historic scope of the strike group's accomplishments during its time in the Middle East. Alongside the Lincoln, escort vessels including the destroyer USS Frank E. Petersen Jr. and the guided-missile cruiser USS Robert Smalls made their own port calls nearby, at Sriracha and Map Ta Phut respectively, rounding out the broader strike group's visit to the region.

Beyond providing rest for the crew, the stop carried clear diplomatic weight, with U.S. officials framing it as a demonstration of the long-standing alliance between the United States and Thailand. Capt. Dan Keeler, the Lincoln's commanding officer, said the visit would help "gain a deeper understanding of one another" and reinforce mutual commitments to regional security. Thousands of sailors and Marines were bused to nearby Pattaya during the stop, providing a noticeable, if temporary, economic boost to the coastal resort city, while local Thai authorities coordinated with port officials and the Royal Thai Navy to manage the visit smoothly.

With the port call now concluded, the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group has resumed its transit through the South China Sea, continuing its long journey back toward its homeport of San Diego. The Lincoln's return marks the end of a deployment that saw it relieved in the Middle East by the Asia-based USS George Washington, closing out one of the most demanding stretches of sustained operations for a U.S. carrier in recent memory. While the exact timeline for the ship's final arrival back in California has not been detailed, the departure from Thailand represents a significant milestone in bringing the strike group and its crew home after nearly a year away.
