Trump Hails $400 Million Rare Earth Deal Now Worth $1.2 Billion

President Trump highlighted a major success in America’s critical minerals strategy during a mining industry event, pointing to a $400 million equity stake the Pentagon took in MP Materials last July. That investment, he noted, is already worth nearly $1.2 billion. Trump referred to the Defense Department as the “Department of War” and made clear the deal was made for national benefit, not personal gain. “I did one of those too. Intel. Do I get credit for that? By the way, it’s for the country, not for me,” he said.

MP Materials operates the only major rare earth mine in the United States at Mountain Pass, California. The Pentagon’s investment included warrants that could give the government up to 15 percent ownership, a 10-year offtake agreement for magnets, and price-floor guarantees for neodymium-praseodymium. These terms were designed to rebuild domestic magnet manufacturing capacity and reduce dependence on China. The rapid appreciation of the stake underscores both the strategic value of the asset and growing market confidence in U.S. rare earth production.

Trump framed the deal as part of a broader push to secure supply chains essential for defense systems, electric vehicles, and advanced technology. By locking in long-term commitments and supporting price stability, the arrangement aims to make American rare earth processing and magnet production commercially viable. The president has repeatedly argued that relying on foreign adversaries for critical materials poses an unacceptable national security risk. The MP Materials investment stands as a concrete example of that policy in action.

The strong performance of the stake so far has given the administration a clear win to point to as it continues expanding domestic mining and processing. Supporters see the deal as proof that targeted government partnership with private industry can deliver both strategic resilience and financial returns for taxpayers. As competition with China intensifies, expect more moves like this aimed at bringing critical mineral supply chains back under American control.
