Bradley Creek Wildfire Devours Lakeside Homes Near Vernon After Explosive Growth

Dramatic video footage filmed from a boat on Okanagan Lake captured intense flames racing through lakeside homes, trees, and dry vegetation under thick plumes of smoke. The Bradley Creek wildfire near Vernon, British Columbia, first reported on July 31, 2026, exploded in size to more than 2,600 hectares by August 2. Strong winds and dry conditions allowed the blaze to jump Highway 97, destroy multiple properties, and force widespread evacuations that included residents of the Okanagan Indian Reserve. Firefighters and emergency crews focused heavily on protecting remaining structures as the fire swept rapidly through valley grasses along the northern tip of the lake.

British Columbia continues to face elevated wildfire activity in 2026 driven by dry fuels and challenging weather patterns that have made containment extremely difficult. Crews worked around the clock under hazardous conditions while the fire burned aggressively through the area, creating scenes of destruction visible from the water. Thousands of people were ordered to leave their homes as the out-of-control blaze threatened communities and critical infrastructure. Power outages and road closures compounded the hardship for those forced to flee with little notice.

Local and provincial response teams have been working to contain hotspots and restore services while supporting evacuees. The speed of the fire’s spread highlighted the vulnerability of the region’s dry landscape and the critical need for rapid coordination during extreme weather events. Residents and emergency personnel continue to monitor the situation closely as recovery efforts begin in the hardest-hit zones along the lake.
