Iran Cracks Under Pressure, Admits Blockade Is Draining Its Gas Tank Dry

In a stunning admission that lays bare the mounting pressure on Tehran, a spokesman for the Iranian parliament's Energy Committee has confirmed that gasoline imports into the country have ground to a halt because of the maritime blockade. Reza Sepahvand told reporters that Iran is now struggling to keep enough fuel flowing to supply its own vehicles, a remarkable concession from a regime that has spent years projecting strength and self-sufficiency. The blockade, which has choked off critical shipping lanes, appears to be doing exactly what it was designed to do — squeezing the Iranian economy at one of its most vulnerable pressure points.

The numbers paint a grim picture for ordinary Iranians already lining up at the pump. Even before the blockade cut off imports entirely, Iran was producing only about 105 million liters of gasoline per day while consuming roughly 135 million — a shortfall of nearly 30 million liters daily that the country had been covering through imports. With those imports now stopped cold, that gap threatens to widen dramatically, raising the specter of rationing, long fuel lines, and rising domestic unrest in a country where gasoline subsidies have long been treated as politically untouchable.

For an economy already battered by sanctions and years of mismanagement, the sudden loss of gasoline imports could not come at a worse time. Analysts note that fuel shortages have historically been one of the fastest ways to spark public anger inside Iran, and a prolonged supply crunch could pile new pressure on a government already navigating a fragile geopolitical moment. Whether Tehran can find workarounds to keep its cars running, or whether this admission marks the start of a deeper energy crisis, the blockade's bite is now undeniable — straight from Iran's own officials.
