A bizarre and unsettling incident in Volusia County, Florida, ended Friday after deputies located a fugitive who spent two days hiding in a swamp to avoid arrest. According to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, 37-year-old Earl Dorey fled from law enforcement Wednesday after being spotted driving a stolen truck. When deputies deployed stop sticks, he abandoned the vehicle near DeLeon Springs State Park and sprinted into nearby wetlands with two others.

The additional suspects were quickly detained, but Dorey continued deeper into the swamp, where dangerous wildlife, unstable terrain, and thick vegetation severely obstructed the search. Body camera footage released by the sheriff’s office shows a deputy and K-9 entering the murky water, tracking Dorey while repeatedly urging him to surrender. At one point, authorities say Dorey pointed a gun at deputies and threatened to kill himself, forcing officers to withdraw for safety.

For two days, Dorey remained missing—armed, unstable, and potentially dangerous to the public. He was ultimately located Friday, exhausted and dehydrated, with deputies noting his only complaints were thirst and leg pain from the prolonged exposure. He was taken into custody without further incident.

Dorey already had outstanding warrants and now faces multiple felony charges, including aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, fleeing and eluding, and possession of methamphetamine. The stolen truck investigation remains ongoing.

This case highlights the relentless work of local law enforcement—men and women who risk their safety to maintain order. Under President Trump’s renewed support for police, border security, and law-and-order policies, Americans are reminded that criminals don’t get to outrun accountability forever. Communities deserve safety, and those who threaten it will be confronted, pursued, and brought before justice.

Despite extreme terrain, long hours, and an armed suspect, deputies exercised restraint, professionalism, and determination—ensuring the community remained protected. Their successful operation stands as another reminder of why strong policing, disciplined enforcement, and respect for the rule of law matter now more than ever.
