President Donald Trump warned that antisemitism is gaining ground in Congress during remarks delivered at the White House Hanukkah celebration on Tuesday, December 16. Speaking before Jewish leaders, supporters, and administration officials, the President framed his comments as a defense of Jewish Americans and of Israel at a time of rising hostility toward both.

Trump stated that Congress “is becoming antisemitic,” arguing that certain lawmakers have normalized rhetoric and positions that undermine Jewish communities and America’s closest Middle East ally. His comments reflected long-standing concerns raised by pro-Israel advocates who have criticized what they see as a growing tolerance for anti-Israel and antisemitic narratives within parts of the Democratic Party.

During his remarks, Trump also accused Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar of harboring hostility toward Jewish people. While he did not cite specific evidence during the event, Trump has frequently criticized Omar over her past statements on Israel and U.S. foreign policy, which many Jewish organizations and bipartisan lawmakers have condemned as crossing into antisemitic tropes.

Omar, a Minnesota congresswoman and one of Trump’s most outspoken critics, has previously rejected such accusations and characterized the President’s repeated focus on her as excessive. The exchange highlights an ongoing political clash that has become emblematic of broader debates in Washington over antisemitism, Israel, and the boundaries of legitimate criticism.

Trump’s remarks came in the context of a holiday event emphasizing Jewish heritage, religious freedom, and America’s alliance with Israel. Throughout his presidency, Trump has positioned himself as a staunch defender of Israel, citing actions such as recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, strengthening U.S.–Israel security cooperation, and confronting antisemitism both at home and abroad.

Supporters of the President argue that his comments reflect real concerns shared by many Jewish Americans who feel increasingly targeted by rhetoric emerging from the political left. Critics, meanwhile, contend that Trump’s language intensifies partisan divisions. Regardless, the President’s warning places renewed attention on antisemitism in national politics and signals that the issue will remain a central fault line in the ongoing debate over America’s values and alliances.
