CENTCOM's Iron Grip Tightens: 24 Ships Turned Back From Iran's Ports

US Central Command released new details Friday on the scale of America's ongoing naval blockade against Iran, confirming that forces have redirected 24 commercial vessels, disabled two for non-compliance, and boarded two others to verify cargo and compliance as of July 30. The update came alongside an image of a Navy P-8 Poseidon reconnaissance aircraft approaching an Air Force KC-135 Stratotanker for mid-air refueling while patrolling the region, which CENTCOM described as just one of the many assets used to monitor Middle East waters around the clock. The figures mark a steady climb since the blockade resumed on July 14, rising from 12 vessels redirected on July 25 to 20 by July 29 and now 24, underscoring how aggressively American forces are enforcing the restriction on traffic entering or leaving Iranian ports.

CENTCOM stressed that the blockade targets ships trying to reach Iranian ports specifically and does not restrict freedom of navigation for vessels simply transiting the Strait of Hormuz to other destinations, a distinction the command says Iranian state media and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps have repeatedly misrepresented. Forces generally rely on warnings to redirect non-compliant ships first, only escalating to disabling propulsion systems or boarding when vessels ignore repeated notices. In one notable incident, US aircraft fired Hellfire missiles into the smokestack of a Curaçao-flagged tanker that continued toward Iran's Kharg Island oil terminal despite multiple warnings, disabling the vessel without loss of life. More than 20 US warships, hundreds of aircraft, and thousands of service members remain deployed to enforce what CENTCOM has repeatedly called America's "steel wall blockade."

The update also came as CENTCOM pushed back hard against what it called false claims from Iranian state media, including a report that the commercial tanker M/T Nora had broken through the blockade. CENTCOM flatly denied that account, insisting the vessel never breached American lines and that the blockade remains fully intact. The dispute reflects an increasingly public information war between Washington and Tehran, with the US military framing every redirected tanker as evidence that its campaign to isolate the Iranian regime and cut off its oil revenue is working exactly as designed, regardless of what Iranian propaganda claims.
