Syrian internal security units were deployed into the northeastern city of Hasakah on February 2, 2026, marking a significant development in Syria’s fragmented security landscape and signaling Damascus’s return to areas long administered by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces. The deployment was carried out under the terms of a ceasefire agreement reached on January 30, following weeks of heightened tensions and clashes in northeastern Syria.

The move fulfills part of a broader U.S.-brokered 14-point agreement aimed at ending the 2026 northeastern Syria offensive and preventing a security vacuum in strategically sensitive areas. Under the deal, Syrian Interior Ministry forces were permitted to enter Hasakah to assume internal security responsibilities, while avoiding direct confrontation with SDF units that have governed the city and surrounding areas for years.

Video footage from the city shows a convoy of approximately fifteen vehicles, including police trucks and security transports, moving through dusty streets as armed personnel took up positions. Local residents and observers, some riding motorcycles alongside the convoy, watched as the forces advanced, underscoring the symbolic weight of the moment. For Damascus, the deployment represents a cautious but visible reassertion of state authority in territory that had effectively remained outside central government control since the early years of the war.

The agreement reflects mutual concerns shared by the Syrian government, the SDF, and international mediators over the risk of renewed violence, ISIS exploitation, and instability following recent fighting. By allowing regime security units to return in a limited and coordinated manner, the deal seeks to stabilize Hasakah while preserving a fragile balance between rival power centers.

While the deployment does not mark a full transfer of control, it highlights a shifting reality in northeastern Syria, where years of de facto SDF autonomy are increasingly intersecting with Damascus’s efforts to reclaim influence. Whether the arrangement leads to lasting stability or merely postpones future confrontation remains uncertain, but the presence of Syrian security forces in Hasakah once again signals a notable change on the ground after years of separation.
