Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a 41-year-old Lebanese-American, carried out a violent attack on Temple Israel synagogue in West Bloomfield, Michigan, on March 13, 2026. Ghazali drove a truck loaded with fireworks into the building, which houses a preschool, and exchanged gunfire with on-site security before taking his own life. One guard sustained minor injuries, while all 140 children inside escaped unharmed, thanks to extensive security training and preparedness measures.

Investigations have revealed that Ghazali had family ties to Hezbollah, with sources reporting that his brothers in Lebanon were members of a Hezbollah rocket unit, including one commander confirmed by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Ghazali, naturalized as a U.S. citizen in 2016 through a spousal visa, had no prior criminal record but had been reportedly devastated by the death of his brothers in an Israeli airstrike on March 5, 2026. Authorities are exploring whether the attack may have been motivated by revenge, compounded by recent social isolation and personal distress.

The incident underscores a troubling increase in antisemitic activity in the United States. According to the Anti-Defamation League, there have been twelve plots targeting Jewish institutions since July 2024, compared with seven in the prior period, signaling a significant uptick in threats against Jewish communities.

Security experts note that the rapid response and training of Temple Israel staff were critical in preventing a far greater tragedy. The attack has prompted renewed calls for enhanced protections at religious institutions nationwide, including fortified perimeters, active security personnel, and community awareness programs.

Authorities continue to investigate the extent of Ghazali’s connections and possible planning related to the attack, while monitoring potential copycat threats. The incident highlights the complex intersection of international conflict, personal grievance, and domestic security challenges facing U.S. communities amid rising antisemitism.
