Dramatic footage circulating online shows the moment a massive explosion ripped through Kyiv's Northern, or Pivnichnyi, Bridge, sending a fireball and thick black smoke into the sky with cars still visible on the structure. Verified reporting from the BBC, CNN, and Ukrainian officials confirms a Russian jet-powered drone struck the bridge on October 4, injuring two civilians and damaging the roadway. The bridge is one of Kyiv's most critical transport links, connecting the Obolon and Troieshchyna districts across the Dnipro River and serving as a main route tying hundreds of thousands of people in the eastern suburbs to the city center. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed the strike also damaged the trolleybus power lines running across the bridge, forcing authorities to suspend several bus and trolleybus routes and reroute traffic through the Podilskyi Bridge instead.
This marks the second consecutive day the Northern Bridge has been hit, and part of a brutal four-day stretch in which Russian drones have repeatedly struck Kyiv's bridges over the Dnipro. Russia's Ministry of Defense has defended the strikes, claiming the crossings are used to move Ukrainian troops and military supplies, though Ukrainian officials say the attacks are effectively cutting the capital in two. President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia has launched more than 1,900 attack drones at Ukraine over the past week alone, more than 800 of them jet-powered, with Moscow signaling the Kyiv bridge campaign is far from over. For a city already bracing for what comes next, the message from Russian officials has been blunt, this was just one strike in what they're calling a much larger escalation still to come.
