Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan used his address to the United Nations General Assembly to demand the world act immediately on Gaza, insisting that reconstruction of the devastated territory cannot wait any longer. He called on the international community to exert more pressure on Israel to allow that rebuilding to move forward, framing the issue as a matter of global conscience rather than a dispute between two nations. Attempts to strangle the state of Palestine will fail, Erdogan declared from the podium, a line that landed as one of the sharpest moments of his speech. Israel's delegation reportedly left the chamber while he spoke, underscoring just how strained relations between Ankara and Jerusalem have become since the war in Gaza began.

Erdogan also used the moment to reaffirm Turkey's commitment to the Sharm el-Sheikh agreement, the ceasefire and transition framework brokered roughly a year ago with backing from the United States and other nations. Despite that deal, he argued, progress on the ground has stalled, pointing to continued violence and a rebuilding effort that has yet to meaningfully begin. It marked Erdogan's sixteenth address to the UN General Assembly, a milestone that reflects just how central the Palestinian cause has remained to his foreign policy over the years. With Gaza's reconstruction still hanging in the balance and tensions between Turkey and Israel showing no signs of easing, Erdogan's renewed call for pressure adds yet another layer of urgency to an already fragile situation.
