A massive five-alarm fire erupted at a Brooklyn factory in the early hours of March 11, 2026, sending smoke and flames through the Sunset Park neighborhood. The blaze began at approximately 12:20 a.m. at the Universal Food Distributors warehouse located at 53rd Street and First Avenue, rapidly spreading to two adjacent buildings.

Video footage from the scene shows towering flames engulfing the warehouse, with firefighters working relentlessly to control the fire. The FDNY responded with 84 units and 270 personnel, including fireboats, mobilizing a coordinated effort to contain the blaze. Fire crews pumped an estimated 15,000 gallons of water per minute to bring the flames under control.

Despite the intensity of the fire, which caused the roof of the main building to collapse, no civilians were reported injured. Two firefighters sustained minor injuries while battling the blaze. Emergency crews prioritized containment to prevent further spread to nearby structures in the densely populated industrial area.

The five-alarm designation reflects the scale and complexity of the fire, requiring extensive coordination between multiple firefighting teams. Sunset Park residents were evacuated from nearby buildings as a precaution, and traffic was temporarily halted along First Avenue while operations were underway.

FDNY officials commended the rapid response and professionalism of the crews involved, noting that such large-scale fires demand precise coordination, resource allocation, and real-time strategy adjustments. Investigators are currently assessing the cause of the fire, though preliminary reports suggest the origin was within the main warehouse.

The incident underscores the hazards faced by industrial workers and first responders alike, as well as the FDNY’s capacity to mobilize large-scale responses to protect life and property in urban settings. As clean-up and damage assessments continue, the community is being reassured that risk to residents has been minimized and that recovery efforts will proceed quickly.
