Mayon Volcano in Albay, Philippines, just reminded everyone who is in charge. At 11:53 AM on October 30, 2026, the volcano let loose a moderately explosive eruption that shot a thick ash plume about 3 kilometers into the sky. The blast lasted only about six minutes, but it was enough for PHIVOLCS to raise the alert from Level 2 to Level 3 on its 0-to-5 scale. This is not Mayon's first time at this level, since it spent months under Alert Level 3 earlier this year before settling down. Now it is back, and it is doing so with a plume visible across the province.

The plume drifted west-southwest, and authorities expect ashfall in Daraga, Camalig, Guinobatan, and other nearby Albay municipalities. Residents have been urged to evacuate the 6-kilometer permanent danger zone around the crater, where entry is strictly prohibited. Alert Level 3 signals increased tendency toward a hazardous eruption, meaning lava flows and pyroclastic density currents could affect the upper to middle slopes in the coming days to weeks. Pyroclastic density currents are fast-moving avalanches of hot gas and volcanic debris, which is why the danger zone matters so much. Anyone living near the volcano should follow PHIVOLCS bulletins and local government advisories, and keep face masks and emergency supplies ready in case ash starts falling.
