Explosions and air-raid sirens rattled Riyadh early Saturday as Houthi forces struck fuel storage infrastructure at King Khalid International Airport, marking the first time Yemen's Houthi movement has hit Saudi Arabia's capital since fighting between the two sides reignited earlier this year. Reuters footage showed a towering plume of black smoke and visible flames rising from an Aramco-branded fuel tank near the airport highway and main terminal, with Saudi Civil Defense issuing overnight hostile aerial threat alerts for Riyadh and nearby Al-Kharj before declaring the danger over by morning. Saudi authorities confirmed their air defenses intercepted a ballistic missile aimed at the capital, while the Houthis said separately that they had launched a wider barrage of missiles and drones targeting what they called sensitive sites in Riyadh as well as Aramco facilities in the port city of Yanbu. Flight-tracking data showed King Khalid Airport hit the maximum level on FlightRadar24's disruption index, with widespread delays and cancellations, though no casualties from the Riyadh strike have been reported.

The attack lands amid a sharp escalation in hostilities that began in July, when the Houthis declared a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia and started striking vessels in the Red Sea, and intensified further after a September 8 barrage that hit energy facilities across four southwestern Saudi cities, injuring 73 people and prompting roughly 50 retaliatory strikes from the Saudi-led coalition. The Houthis, who claim to be responding to Saudi strikes on Yemen's capital Sanaa, now control the Bab al-Mandab strait, giving them added strategic leverage to sustain a campaign against Saudi Arabia's core infrastructure. The United Nations Security Council had condemned continued Houthi attacks just a day earlier, and Saturday's strike on the capital itself is likely to test whether Riyadh's retaliatory posture can deter further attacks or whether the war is now edging toward a new and more dangerous phase.
