Mayor Zohran Mamdani says he is ready to set politics aside if it means making life more affordable for New Yorkers, even if that means teaming up with President Trump. "I will work with anyone, no matter what party they belong to," Mamdani said, framing the stance as a direct response to the pressure hundreds of thousands of residents are feeling just to stay in the city they call home. The democratic socialist mayor said he genuinely appreciates his conversations with Trump about, in his words, "how we can make it easier to afford life" in New York, a notably warm characterization given the bitter rhetoric the two traded throughout Mamdani's mayoral campaign.

Housing and affordability have emerged as the clearest common ground between the two men, surfacing repeatedly across their meetings since Mamdani's election, even as they remain sharply divided on nearly everything else, from immigration enforcement to the mayor's democratic socialist platform. Mamdani has been consistent on this point since before taking office, telling reporters back in November that his outreach to the White House reflected a broader commitment to work with anyone who could help address the city's most pressing needs. For a mayor who once vowed New York would show the country how to defeat Trump politically, the willingness to collaborate on kitchen-table issues like rent and grocery prices marks a pragmatic, if unlikely, thread running through an otherwise combative relationship.
