Former Mossad director Yossi Cohen delivered a blunt assessment of Russian President Vladimir Putin, warning Western audiences against wishful thinking about regime change in Moscow. Speaking during remarks at Tufts University in 2022, comments that resurfaced widely in December 2025, Cohen described Putin as a calculating, intelligent leader whose hold on power is secure well into the next decade.

“Vladimir Putin is a serious guy,” Cohen said. “Now he is on his third term as president, and this is the last time he will be president for 10 years. He is guaranteed to be the czar of Russia till 2036.” Cohen emphasized that expectations of Putin’s imminent departure misunderstand both Russia’s political structure and Putin’s personal command of it.

The former Mossad chief dismissed the idea that internal collapse or sudden regime change is likely, stating plainly, “So don’t hold your breath as if he’s going tomorrow or there will be a regime change. I don’t predict that this will happen.” His comments stand in sharp contrast to narratives that portray Putin as weak, isolated, or on the verge of removal.

Cohen, who led Israel’s foreign intelligence service during some of the most complex geopolitical years in the Middle East, stressed that Putin’s durability is rooted in his sharp strategic thinking. “I think he’s smart. His calculus is very sharp,” Cohen said, adding that Putin “understands and appreciates a lot of intelligence.” From Cohen’s perspective, this intellectual discipline is precisely what makes Putin a formidable and enduring figure.

The remarks have regained attention amid the ongoing war in Ukraine and renewed speculation in Western media about Russia’s political future. Cohen’s assessment cuts against optimistic assumptions that sanctions, battlefield pressure, or internal dissent will quickly dislodge the Kremlin leader.

Coming from a former Mossad chief — a figure deeply familiar with intelligence analysis, regime behavior, and power dynamics — the comments serve as a sobering reminder that global strategy cannot be built on assumptions or hope. Cohen’s message is clear: Putin is entrenched, rational, and planning long-term, and serious policymakers must account for that reality rather than deny it.
