California Governor Gavin Newsom confirmed Tuesday that his administration is closely monitoring a federal warning after the Federal Bureau of Investigation alerted law enforcement agencies across the state about a potential Iranian retaliation scenario involving drone strikes along the U.S. West Coast. The bulletin, circulated to police departments and security agencies in California, outlined intelligence suggesting that Iranian operatives could explore launching unmanned aerial vehicles from vessels positioned offshore as part of a surprise attack.

Security experts note that while the scenario is technically plausible, executing such an operation would present significant logistical and operational challenges. Launching drones capable of traveling hundreds of miles, maintaining stable guidance, and reaching precise targets would require sophisticated equipment, coordination, and concealment at sea. U.S. coastal surveillance systems, naval patrols, and layered air defense networks also provide multiple lines of monitoring that would complicate an adversary’s attempt to carry out a surprise attack.

The warning emerged just before a series of U.S. and Israeli military strikes against Iranian targets earlier in March 2026, actions that significantly heightened tensions between Tehran and Western allies. Intelligence officials have long warned that Iran could respond to such operations through asymmetric tactics, including cyberattacks, proxy activity, or unconventional strike methods designed to avoid direct conventional confrontation.

For U.S. national security planners, the concept of drones launched from vessels is part of a broader category of evolving threats involving unmanned systems. Iran has invested heavily in drone technology over the past decade, developing a wide range of platforms used by its own military forces and by allied militias across the Middle East. These systems have been deployed in conflicts throughout the region, including attacks on energy infrastructure, military bases, and shipping lanes.
