The U.S. Department of War has awarded Boeing an $877,742,891 contract to produce additional MH-47G Block II heavy-lift helicopters for U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM), extending the fleet’s manufacturing through 2030. The order is designed to sustain and modernize the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, a unit renowned for its reliability in high-risk missions, including covert operations in Afghanistan and other global hotspots.

The MH-47G, a heavy-lift variant of the iconic Vietnam-era Chinook, has been upgraded under the Block II program with advanced night-vision capabilities, modern defensive systems, and enhanced avionics to address current threats. Footage accompanying the announcement shows an MH-47G performing low-level flight and executing a precise landing in a grassy, tree-lined field—highlighting the aircraft’s agility for covert insertions and tactical flexibility despite its decades-old design lineage.

According to U.S. military officials, the new contract ensures that SOCOM maintains a fleet capable of transporting personnel, equipment, and vehicles in complex operational environments. The Block II enhancements improve survivability and mission effectiveness, allowing special operations forces to conduct nighttime and high-risk missions with greater confidence.

Boeing’s production of these helicopters represents a strategic investment in the U.S. military’s rapid deployment and special operations capabilities. By combining proven airframe reliability with modern technology upgrades, the MH-47G Block II continues to serve as a cornerstone of U.S. heavy-lift aviation support, reinforcing America’s readiness for global operations.

The contract’s duration and scale reflect the Department of War’s commitment to ensuring that SOCOM retains a robust, capable fleet able to respond to evolving threats, sustain mission readiness, and maintain a tactical advantage in any theater of operations.
