Vice President JD Vance is sounding the alarm about a very online problem threatening his party's midterm chances: what he calls blackpilling, the wave of defeatist, doom-laden pessimism spreading across social media among conservatives. In a recent interview, Vance argued that this creeping negativity, fueled by frustration over the economy, foreign policy, and other bumps in the Trump administration's record, could quietly convince disillusioned Republicans to simply stay home in November. Rather than dismissing that frustration outright, Vance leaned into it, acknowledging there is real work left to do while insisting that checking out of politics is exactly the wrong response. His message was blunt: stay engaged, stay in the fight, and do not let internet doom-scrolling talk you out of showing up to vote.

The comments fit squarely into Vance's broader midterm playbook, one built around admitting voter disappointment without ever conceding the argument. He has repeatedly told audiences that giving up now would only hand power back to Democrats, framing continued turnout as the only way to protect the GOP's slim congressional majorities. It's a message born of necessity, Republicans are bracing for the kind of headwinds that typically batter the party occupying the White House during a midterm cycle, and Vance's own polling and approval numbers have not made that job any easier. By calling out blackpilling directly, he is essentially asking his own base to snap out of the gloom, arguing that cynicism online is a far bigger threat to Republicans right now than anything Democrats are doing.
