Mystery Jets Land at RAF Fairford, Fueling Iran Deployment Speculation

Plane spotters at RAF Fairford tracked the arrival of an EA-37B Compass Call II electronic warfare aircraft, callsign FAZE21, on the morning of July 23, with a second Compass Call reportedly inbound behind it. The Gulfstream G550-based jets are among the U.S. Air Force's newest and most closely watched assets, purpose-built to blind an adversary's ability to see, hear, or communicate in a fight. Given the current state of open hostilities between the United States and Iran, the timing of this movement has quickly drawn attention from open-source observers tracking the buildup of American airpower across Europe and the Middle East.

The EA-37B is a heavily modified business jet stuffed with conformal antennas and software-defined mission systems capable of jamming enemy radar, radio communications, data links, and GPS navigation from high altitude and long range, all without dropping a single weapon. It was designed to replace the aging EC-130H Compass Call and has already seen action, having been added to U.S. Central Command's order of battle for operations against Iran earlier this year. Staging through hubs like RAF Fairford, RAF Mildenhall, and Ramstein Air Base has become a familiar pattern for the small but growing Compass Call fleet as it shuttles between training, NATO familiarization tours, and actual combat taskings in CENTCOM.

This latest arrival fits into a much larger picture of American force posture in the region, with fighter squadrons, carrier strike groups, refueling tankers, and now additional electronic attack aircraft all converging on the Middle East theater as the standoff with Tehran grinds on. Whether these two jets are bound directly for CENTCOM or simply staging in the UK for now, their presence at Fairford underscores how seriously Washington is treating the electromagnetic dimension of this fight. With reports of nightly strikes on Iranian targets and Houthi forces now drawn into attacks on Red Sea shipping, every additional asset moving toward the region adds to the sense that this conflict is far from winding down.
