The USS Kearsarge (LHD-3), a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship, departed Naval Station Norfolk and headed to sea on the morning of February 9, 2026, marking the start of routine at-sea operations. The departure occurred at approximately 11:00 hours, with the ship proceeding outbound under clear conditions as it transitioned from port to open waters.

Drone footage captured the USS Kearsarge’s departure, highlighting the scale and capability of one of the U.S. Navy’s most versatile amphibious platforms. As the lead ship of the Wasp class, Kearsarge is designed to support expeditionary operations, crisis response, and forward presence missions. The vessel is capable of embarking up to 1,800 U.S. Marines along with their equipment, enabling rapid deployment of combat power from the sea.

The ship’s air combat element includes the ability to operate up to six F-35B Lightning II stealth fighters, as well as a mix of rotary-wing aircraft such as AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters, MV-22 Osprey tiltrotors, and other support helicopters. In addition, the USS Kearsarge can deploy landing craft and amphibious vehicles, allowing it to project force ashore without relying on established ports or airfields.

While the Navy has not indicated that the movement is tied to a specific contingency, such departures reflect the constant operational tempo required to maintain readiness and global presence. Amphibious assault ships like the USS Kearsarge play a central role in U.S. naval strategy, providing commanders with flexible options ranging from humanitarian assistance to high-end combat operations.

The departure from Norfolk underscores the U.S. Navy’s ongoing commitment to forward readiness and rapid response. As the USS Kearsarge heads to sea, it represents a fully integrated amphibious strike capability, combining air, land, and maritime power in a single platform prepared for a wide range of missions.
