President Donald Trump indicated that the ongoing U.S.-Israeli military campaign against Iran may need to inflict lasting damage to prevent future threats, emphasizing a long-term strategic objective. Speaking from the White House, Trump stated that while current strikes have significantly degraded Iran’s capabilities, additional measures may be necessary to ensure the threat does not reemerge. He framed the effort as a way to prevent future U.S. presidents from confronting the same security challenges.

The operation, known as Operation Epic Fury, began on February 28, 2026, targeting Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, missile systems, and elements of its leadership. According to administration officials, the strikes were intended to disrupt what they described as an advancing nuclear threat. Trump has repeatedly argued that decisive military action was required after diplomatic efforts failed to produce a lasting agreement.

In his remarks, Trump suggested that the damage already inflicted could take Iran years to rebuild, but stressed that a more “permanent” outcome is necessary. He characterized the campaign as a preventative measure against the possibility of hostile actors acquiring nuclear weapons, warning of the long-term risks such capabilities could pose. Supporters of the strategy view it as a firm stance against proliferation and a demonstration of deterrence.

Critics, however, caution that pursuing irreversible damage could deepen the conflict and increase the likelihood of prolonged instability in the region. Analysts note that while the strikes may have achieved immediate tactical objectives, questions remain about escalation risks, regional retaliation, and the long-term geopolitical consequences. As the situation evolves, Trump’s comments underscore a strategic shift toward ensuring enduring impact rather than short-term disruption.
