Boruch Dayan Ha’emes: A heavy cloud of mourning has descended upon the Chassidic world with the bitter news from New York of the histalkus of the Biala Ostrova Rebbe, Z”L, of the Givat Shaul neighborhood in Yerushalayim. The Rebbe was 61 years old.
The Rebbe was visiting the United States on behalf of his mosdos and to engage in kiruv, as was his lifelong custom, when his health suddenly took a drastic turn for the worse. He underwent a severe medical procedure and was hospitalized in critical condition in a Manhattan hospital. Multitudes of Yidden stormed the heavens for the refuah of Harav Avraham Yerachmiel ben Sarah Rivka, but the gezeirah was sealed, and his pure neshamah ascended to Shomayim surrounded by his family, close mekuravim, and Chassidim.
Born on 5 Sivan 5725, the Rebbe was the son of the Lehavas Dovid of Biala Bnei Brak, Z”L, and the Rebbetzin, Sarah Rivka, A”H. From his youth, he absorbed Torah, Chassidus, and pure yiras Shomayim from his holy ancestors of Biala, Peshischa, and Ostrova, growing into a tremendous talmid chacham and oved Hashem.
When he reached marriageable age, he married his Rebbetzin, the daughter of the Lelover Rebbe, Harav Avraham Shlomo Biderman, Z”L. Following his chasunah, he initially lived on Rechov Rabbeinu Gershom before relocating to Givat Shaul, where he established his renowned Beis Medrash, Biala Ostrova, on Rechov Pinchas Kehati.
The Rebbe spread Torah and yiras Shomayim with tremendous warmth, bringing many distant neshamos closer to their Father in Heaven. He led his edah with incredible dveikus and fiery avodas Hashem. He also established Torah centers and "Lehavas Dovid" Batei Medrash in various communities across the US, including Manhattan, Los Angeles, and Miami. He was a sought-after address for countless Yidden seeking eitzah v'sushiyah, possessing a unique ability to connect with struggling youth and guide them with love, Torah, and middos tovos.
The Rebbe was a giant of spirit whose life was marked by unimaginable mesiras nefesh and heartbreaking tragedies, yet he accepted everything with immeasurable emunah, love, and a holy silence. He lost his first wife, A”H, to a severe illness. Tragically, he also buried three of his children. About ten years ago, his daughter, Mrs. Chana Pesha Frankel, A”H, was killed in the horrific 402 bus crash. He later lost another daughter at a young age. Just half a year ago, he suffered another devastating blow when his eldest son, Harav Moshe Mordechai Rabinowitz, Z”L, passed away suddenly at the age of 36.
Despite these crushing blows and his own physical suffering, the Rebbe continued to lead his kehillah with immense humility, uplifting broken hearts. Chassidim relate that every dollar the Rebbe received was quietly distributed to the needy in Yerushalayim, with the Rebbe stating it should be an aliyah for the neshamos of his beloved children.
The Rebbe's aron is being flown from the US to Eretz Yisroel. The levayah will depart from his Beis Medrash on Rechov Pinchas Kehati in Givat Shaul, en route to Har Hazeisim, where he will be laid to rest in the chelkas avosav.
He is survived by his brothers, who lead the Biala kehillos: the Biala Bnei Brak Rebbe, the Biala Beit Shemesh Rebbe, and the Biala Boro Park Rebbe, as well as his brother-in-law, the Shidlovtza Rebbe.
