United Torah Judaism could potentially consider political cooperation with Gadi Eisenkot and his Yashar party following the election, but whether Eisenkot is prepared to offer terms acceptable to the Haredi parties remains a major question, according to political commentator Yishai Cohen.

“Torah Judaism wants to go with Eisenkot and company,” Cohen said during a Channel 12 discussion. “The question is whether there is a partner on the other side. Right now, it looks like the answer is no.”

The possibility is not purely theoretical. Eisenkot said last month that he was prepared to cooperate with Shas if the party accepted his core principles, signaling that he does not categorically rule out Haredi parties as coalition partners.

The central obstacle, however, remains the draft. Eisenkot has taken an increasingly firm position on Haredi enlistment, saying this month that there would be “no compromise” on establishing military, national or civil service for Israeli citizens. He said only about 3% of each cohort—exceptional students in Torah as well as other fields—would receive exemptions, and indicated that disagreement over the issue could be serious enough to bring down a future government.

That position leaves a substantial gap between Eisenkot and the established Haredi leadership, even as political maneuvering ahead of the election raises questions about whether the traditional alignment of the Haredi parties with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s bloc will continue unchanged
