New regulations governing electric bicycles and electric scooters have taken effect in the Village of Monroe, Orange County, introducing restrictions on where and when residents may ride the devices.
According to a report published by Daily Monroe on Wednesday, October 21, the new rules prohibit e-bikes and e-scooters from being operated on sidewalks and inside Airplane Park, Crane Park, and Smith's Clove Park.
The regulations also prohibit Class III electric bicycles throughout the village. These higher-speed e-bikes can provide motor assistance at speeds of up to 25 miles per hour.
For permitted e-bikes and e-scooters, riders must maintain a speed of no more than 15 miles per hour.
The village has also introduced nighttime riding restrictions that vary by season.
From April through October, riding is prohibited between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. During November through March, the restriction begins earlier, at 7 p.m., and remains in effect until 7 a.m.
The regulations are intended to address safety concerns involving pedestrians, motorists, and riders, particularly in public areas where electric bicycles and scooters may create hazards.
Residents should note that the rules apply specifically to the Village of Monroe. They should not be confused with regulations in the neighboring Village of Kiryas Joel or Town of Palm Tree, which are separate municipalities.
Riders are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the new restrictions to avoid violations and help maintain safety on local roads and in public spaces.
