Large piles of garbage accumulated in parts of Uman's pilgrimage district following the conclusion of Rosh Hashanah, as city services faced the enormous cleanup accompanying the departure of tens of thousands of visitors.

Photos circulating from Uman on Monday showed bags, cardboard boxes, disposable food containers and other refuse piled along streets in areas heavily used by the thousands of mispallelim who spent Yom Tov in the Ukrainian city.

Local reporting said municipal crews were working to remove the accumulated waste following the massive Rosh Hashanah kibbutz.

The cleanup comes despite additional preparations made before Yom Tov to deal with the expected pressure on sanitation services. Extra garbage bins were installed along Turistiv Street and near heavily traveled routes in the pilgrimage district, with organizers saying the measures were intended to help maintain cleanliness as the population of the area swelled for Rosh Hashanah.

The scenes illustrate one of the logistical challenges Uman faces each year as its population temporarily expands dramatically for the annual Rosh Hashanah gathering.
