SMARTER THAN YOU THINK: Bear Opens Car, Loads Cubs, Steals Snacks
In Gatlinburg, Tennessee, a black bear proved just how comfortable she's become around cars, and around people. Video shows her rising up on her hind legs, popping open the unlocked door of a parked teal sedan like she's done it a hundred times before, then stepping back to let all three of her cubs pile inside. For a few tense moments, the little family explores the interior, sniffing around seats and floors clearly hoping to find something worth the trip. Then, just as smoothly as they arrived, one cub climbs out clutching a paper bag believed to hold food, and the whole crew wanders off together, mission apparently accomplished.
As wild as it looks, this kind of scene is far from rare in the Great Smoky Mountains region, where black bears have grown increasingly comfortable, and increasingly skilled, at targeting cars, coolers, and trash left out by tourists. Wildlife officials have documented bears popping open everything from minivans to pickup trucks in search of an easy meal, a habit that develops once bears learn to associate vehicles with food rather than danger. It is a pattern that worries conservationists, since bears that lose their natural wariness of people and cars are more likely to be involved in dangerous encounters down the road. For now, though, this particular bear family walked away with nothing more than a snack, and left behind one more viral reminder to lock your car doors in bear country.
