President Donald Trump told reporters that the current diesel supply problem stems mainly from a shortage of refineries rather than a lack of crude oil, pointing to strong flows through the Strait of Hormuz as proof that the raw material is available. He stated that the United States has tremendous amounts of oil coming out of the strait and that the situation there is going well, yet the real bottleneck remains insufficient refining capacity. Trump linked the shortfall in diesel specifically to the effects of the ongoing war, which has disrupted refining operations and complicated the conversion of crude into usable fuel. His comments come as diesel prices have remained elevated, affecting farmers, truckers, and supply chains across the country. The president framed the issue as one that existing oil production alone cannot solve without more facilities to process it. By highlighting the contrast between abundant crude and limited refining, Trump directed attention toward long-term capacity challenges rather than immediate tanker traffic.

US refinery construction has remained largely stagnant for decades due to regulatory hurdles that have made new builds difficult and costly, leaving the country with fewer plants than in earlier eras. Recent global conflicts have compounded the pressure by damaging or idling refining capacity in key producing regions and tightening diesel availability on world markets. Trump’s remarks underscore his view that expanding domestic refining is essential to ease the current squeeze and reduce reliance on imports of finished fuels. Officials and industry observers note that while crude volumes through Hormuz have recovered in recent weeks, refined products such as diesel have not kept pace. The administration continues to monitor the situation as it weighs options to support fuel supplies. For now, the president’s message is clear: the oil is flowing, but the refineries needed to turn it into diesel are the missing piece.
