Senator John Kennedy fired up the crowd at the Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition, restating a line he has repeated on the Senate floor and on national television for months: "I believe we should go back to having an election day, not an election month." The Louisiana Republican tied the demand directly to the SAVE Act, the bill requiring documentary proof of citizenship, such as a passport or birth certificate, to register to vote in federal elections, along with photo ID requirements to cast a ballot. Kennedy has argued that close races should be resolved within hours, not weeks, insisting that voters deserve to know results the same night or shortly after if the margin is tight. His remarks reflect the broader Republican push to tighten voting rules following the SAVE Act's passage in the House in 2025, even as the bill remains stalled in the Senate.

Kennedy has framed the legislation as a three-part fix for what he calls eroding public confidence in American elections: verifying citizenship, requiring proof of identity to vote, and speeding up how quickly results are counted and certified. Critics of the SAVE Act counter that the documentary proof requirements could disenfranchise eligible voters, including married women whose legal names no longer match their birth certificates, and note that instances of confirmed noncitizen voting remain extremely rare. The bill has already stumbled in the Senate once this year, falling short during a reconciliation vote Kennedy himself forced, and he has since acknowledged its odds of passing have dimmed considerably. Even so, with President Trump backing the measure as a top legislative priority ahead of the midterms, Kennedy shows no sign of dropping the fight to reshape how, and how quickly, the country votes.
