Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., found himself corrected in real time during a Sunday appearance on ABC's "This Week" after incorrectly claiming that Virginia requires photo identification to vote. Host Jonathan Karl, pressing Warner on why Democrats continue to oppose the SAVE America Act despite polling showing 71% of Democrats favor photo ID requirements, asked the senator directly whether his party should get behind the policy. Warner responded by insisting that Virginia already has voter ID and photo ID requirements in place, prompting Karl, who noted he is a Virginia voter himself, to immediately push back and tell Warner that his claim was not accurate.

The exchange highlighted a real gap between Warner's characterization and Virginia's actual election law. Under state rules, voters who show up without an approved form of identification are not turned away; they can sign a statement affirming their identity and still cast a regular ballot, or vote provisionally without signing anything at all. Acceptable forms of ID in Virginia also extend well beyond photo documents, including utility bills, bank statements, government checks, and paychecks, none of which require a photograph. After being corrected, Warner shifted his framing, arguing that any government-stamped photo ID should be acceptable but insisting the SAVE America Act was really about "voter disenfranchisement" rather than voter ID itself.
