A dramatic video from Portsmouth, Rhode Island, shows a tree collapsing onto power lines during gale-force winds caused by the February 2026 Nor’easter, igniting electrical arcs and flames. The storm, classified as a bomb cyclone, brought historic snowfall to the region, producing record-breaking totals and widespread disruptions across the Northeast.

Providence’s T.F. Green Airport recorded an unprecedented 37.9 inches of snow, surpassing the previous all-time storm total from the 1978 Blizzard by more than nine inches. February 23 alone saw 35.5 inches fall, setting a new single-day record for the state. The combination of heavy snow, high winds, and infrastructure vulnerability contributed to incidents like the Portsmouth power line fire, highlighting the hazards posed by extreme winter conditions.

Emergency crews responded to the scene to secure the area and mitigate further electrical hazards, while utility companies worked to restore power to affected residents. The storm’s intensity has led to significant travel disruptions, downed trees, and widespread alerts across Rhode Island and neighboring states.

Meteorologists explained that the convergence of Arctic air and Atlantic moisture fueled the storm’s rapid intensification, creating a classic nor’easter scenario with both heavy snow and high wind gusts. Such conditions increase the risk of infrastructure damage, particularly to exposed power lines and aging electrical systems.

The Portsmouth incident serves as a vivid example of the cascading effects of extreme weather, where historic snowfall, high winds, and falling trees combine to create secondary hazards such as fires, outages, and blocked roadways. Authorities continue to urge residents to exercise caution, stay off roads where possible, and monitor updates from utility and emergency management teams as recovery operations proceed.
