Danon Defies UN Critics: 'Jewish Communities Are Not Going Anywhere'

Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon delivered a defiant message from the Security Council podium this week, declaring that Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria are a permanent fixture of the region and will not be uprooted under any future arrangement. "We are not going anywhere — Jewish communities will stay in Judea and Samaria, just like the Palestinian communities," Danon told the council, framing Israeli presence in the West Bank as a settled reality rather than a matter open to negotiation. The remarks came during a Security Council session focused on West Bank violence amid the broader Israel-Hamas war, a setting where Israel has frequently faced sharp criticism from member states over its policies in the territory.

Danon's statement reflects a long-standing and firmly held position within the Israeli government that Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria, biblically and historically significant territory that much of the international community refers to as the West Bank, possess deep and legitimate roots that predate the modern dispute over the land's final status. By explicitly pairing Jewish communities with Palestinian communities in the same breath, Danon appeared to reject the notion that permanence for one population should come at the expense of the other, instead suggesting the two can and will coexist regardless of how the broader conflict resolves. The comments landed amid heightened scrutiny of West Bank tensions, with the Security Council session itself convened specifically to address rising violence in the territory.

Danon's remarks are likely to draw continued pushback from countries and international bodies that view Israeli communities in the West Bank as an obstacle to a negotiated two-state solution, a position Israel has consistently rejected as one-sided and dismissive of its own security and historical claims to the land. For supporters of Israel's position, Danon's blunt language at the UN podium represents a welcome refusal to bow to international pressure on an issue the Israeli government considers central to its national security and historical legitimacy. As tensions in the West Bank continue to simmer alongside the ongoing war with Hamas, Danon's declaration signals that Israel has no intention of altering its settlement policy regardless of how loudly the international community objects.
