Typhoon Wipha Slams Hong Kong, Triggers City’s Highest Storm Warning and Over 200 Flight Cancellations

HONG KONG — Authorities in Hong Kong have issued the city's highest storm warning as Typhoon Wipha battered the region with intense rain and powerful winds, disrupting daily life and travel across the territory.

The typhoon's approach forced the cancellation of more than 200 flights, leaving thousands of travelers stranded at Hong Kong International Airport. Ferry and rail services were also affected, with officials urging residents to stay indoors and avoid coastal or low-lying areas prone to flooding.

The storm brought sustained winds exceeding 100 km/h (62 mph), along with torrential downpours that caused localized flooding and tree damage across several districts. Emergency services have been deployed throughout the city to manage weather-related incidents, though no fatalities have been reported as of this writing.

The Hong Kong Observatory raised its No. 10 hurricane signal, the highest on its scale, reflecting the severity of Typhoon Wipha’s impact.
