A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crew rescued two people from a 67-foot vessel that ran aground on a sandbar near Bulls Bay, South Carolina, in a nighttime operation that showcased the precision of the service's search-and-rescue capabilities. An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Facility Charleston was dispatched to the scene after the boat became stranded, according to U.S. Coast Guard Southeast. Video released from the operation shows the rescue illuminated by the helicopter's spotlight, with the crew deploying a hoist basket to lift both individuals off the grounded vessel in the dark. Both people were safely hoisted and transferred to emergency medical services, with no injuries reported.

The mission followed a familiar but demanding profile for Coast Guard aviators working the waters off South Carolina's coast. Bulls Bay, known for its shifting sandbars and shallow approaches, has been the site of similar groundings in the past, and Air Facility Charleston's MH-65 crews have handled several such rescues in the area over the years. The Dolphin helicopter, in service with the Coast Guard for decades, is built specifically for missions like this one, capable of operating in low visibility and at night while deploying hoists to reach mariners stranded in situations too dangerous or shallow for boats to approach directly. That capability proved essential here, allowing the crew to extract both individuals without needing to wait for daylight or for a surface vessel to navigate the sandbar.

Once safely hoisted, the two individuals were flown to a nearby location and handed off to local emergency medical services as a precaution, even though neither sustained injuries in the grounding. Coast Guard officials have not released additional details about what caused the vessel to run aground or the identities of those rescued, consistent with standard practice for routine SAR case reporting. The operation adds to a long list of similar rescues carried out by Air Facility Charleston throughout the year, reflecting the steady demand placed on Coast Guard aviation units along the Southeast coastline.

Beyond the immediate outcome, the rescue serves as a reminder of the round-the-clock readiness maintained by Coast Guard air crews patrolling South Carolina's waterways. Vessel groundings, mechanical failures, and other maritime emergencies can happen at any hour, and the ability to respond quickly, even in complete darkness, often makes the difference between a routine recovery and a far more serious outcome. For the two people pulled from the stranded boat near Bulls Bay, a night that could have ended in real danger instead ended with a safe hoist, a helicopter ride, and a routine medical check.
