Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky delivered a blunt and unmistakable warning this week, telling every airline that still flies through Russian airspace, every insurer that covers those flights, and everyone who relies on Russia's major airports that the skies above the country are becoming genuinely dangerous. He made clear that Ukraine has no intention of targeting civilian aircraft and that not a single passenger plane is in its crosshairs. But he was equally clear that the sheer volume of drones now operating over Russian territory has reached a scale that simply cannot be ignored by anyone still choosing to fly there. It was less a threat aimed at civilians and more a stark warning about the environment that Russia's own war has created above its own soil.

Zelensky framed the situation as a direct consequence of choices Moscow made, not something Ukraine set out to cause. He said that although Russian authorities haven't been transparent about the danger, the reality on the ground, or rather in the air, is that Russian airspace will effectively be closing whether officials admit it publicly or not. His phrasing was pointed: the war that Russia started is now closing its own skies, a reversal that puts the consequences of the conflict squarely back on the country that launched it. For airlines still routing flights through Moscow, St. Petersburg, or other major Russian hubs, that message amounts to a direct signal that business as usual is no longer a safe assumption.

To back up the warning with something more concrete than rhetoric, Zelensky announced that Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other institutions will brief international organizations and provide detailed information about the risks present in Russian airspace. He specifically called out ambassadors stationed in both Kyiv and Moscow, urging them to relay the warning back to their home governments so that airlines and regulators abroad take the danger seriously. This isn't the first time concerns like this have surfaced. The European Union's own aviation safety agency previously warned non-European carriers against flying through western Russian airspace, citing the 2024 crash of an Azerbaijan Airlines plane after it was struck amid Russian air defense activity targeting Ukrainian drones, an incident that killed 38 people and underscored just how real these risks can be.

The warning arrives against a backdrop of intensifying violence on both sides of the border. Russia has escalated its own strikes on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities in recent weeks, with one recent overnight assault killing a dozen people and injuring many more using a mix of drones and missiles. Zelensky's message, in effect, draws a direct line between that continued bombardment and the deteriorating safety of Russian skies, framing it as a natural consequence rather than an escalation on Ukraine's part. "Civilian aviation has no place among drones," he said, a line meant to leave no ambiguity about how seriously Kyiv wants the international community to treat the shifting danger overhead.
