Hawaii’s Kilauea Volcano experienced a brief but intense eruption on December 23, 2025, as lava fountains from the summit reached heights of approximately 70 feet. The episode began at 8:10 p.m. HST in the Halemaʻumaʻu crater and lasted roughly 5.9 hours, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

Video footage captured rhythmic jets of molten lava, highlighting the ongoing power of one of the world’s most active volcanoes. USGS scientists noted that the activity was driven by pressurized magma beneath the summit, producing episodic fountaining similar to patterns observed during the past year.

This eruption coincides with the one-year anniversary of Kilauea’s ongoing eruptive phase, which began on December 23, 2024. Over the past year, the volcano has displayed intermittent lava fountains, seismic activity, and gas emissions, providing a continuous natural laboratory for monitoring volcanic processes and hazards.

Authorities have confirmed that no injuries or structural damage were reported during the brief eruption, but visitors and residents are reminded to maintain safe distances from the summit area and follow all guidance from the USGS and local emergency officials.

The latest activity underscores Kilauea’s persistent volcanic energy and its importance for scientific study, as well as the ongoing need for vigilance in Hawaii’s volcanic regions.
