Central Vietnam is facing a worsening humanitarian crisis after days of relentless rainfall submerged more than 128,000 homes and claimed at least 37 lives since October 30, 2025. With Typhoon Kalmaegi rapidly intensifying in the South China Sea and forecasted to make landfall between November 7 and 9, the region is bracing for a potentially catastrophic escalation.

Aerial footage from provincial authorities shows vast stretches of farmland, towns, and villages blanketed in muddy floodwaters, with residents stranded on rooftops and roads reduced to rivers. Emergency crews have been working around the clock to deliver food, water, and medical supplies, but access to remote districts remains limited due to collapsed bridges and submerged highways.

Meteorological centers across Asia — including the Hong Kong Observatory and Thailand’s TMD — have confirmed Kalmaegi’s strengthening trajectory toward Vietnam’s central coast. The storm is expected to bring torrential rain, destructive winds, and the risk of deadly landslides in already saturated terrain.

Authorities have evacuated tens of thousands of people in Quang Nam, Thua Thien Hue, and Quang Ngai provinces, with local officials warning that many flood control systems are at capacity. Relief agencies are calling for international assistance to bolster recovery efforts as the situation deteriorates.

While Vietnam is no stranger to seasonal typhoons, this dual disaster — a historic flood compounded by an approaching major storm — underscores the region’s vulnerability to extreme weather events. The economic toll is already mounting, with widespread crop loss and infrastructure damage threatening livelihoods across the country’s agricultural heartland.

As Typhoon Kalmaegi approaches, central Vietnam stands on the brink of a full-scale disaster. Officials and rescue teams continue to plead for calm, coordination, and readiness — knowing that the coming days could define the scale of devastation to follow.
