Since 1949, China has carried out some of the most extensive land-reclamation projects of any nation, with provinces such as Zhejiang and Jiangsu and major cities including Shanghai and Tianjin leading modern coastal expansion. The practice has allowed the country to create new usable ground in areas where natural land is scarce.

Shanghai has notably converted portions of its reclaimed territory in Nanhui into green spaces, parks, and wetlands. As usable land grows limited worldwide, the Chinese approach offers a clear alternative to building only upward: constructing outward over water.
