Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz delivered one of his starkest warnings yet to Iran this week, telling Defense Ministry employees that any Iranian attack on Israel would completely remove the restraints currently guiding Israel's response. Speaking ahead of the Rosh Hashanah holiday, Katz said such an attack would "free us from any existing restrictions," setting up a threat that went far beyond typical military rhetoric. "We will cripple Iran's infrastructure, including energy, and send them back to the Stone Age and darkness," he said, promising that Israel would target Iran's national, military, and civilian systems alike if provoked into renewed conflict.

Katz paired that warning with an assessment of Iran's internal state, suggesting the regime may be edging closer to a breaking point. He pointed to what he described as clear signs that heavy economic pressure, combined with growing fear of internal uprising and potential regime collapse, could push Iranian leadership toward "desperate measures." He also took a moment to remind Iran's leadership why they've largely refrained from attacking Israel in recent months, referencing two earlier rounds of Israeli strikes that he said destroyed Iran's nuclear program, eliminated former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and severely degraded the country's broader strategic capabilities. In Katz's telling, that history explains Tehran's current restraint far better than any goodwill.

The timing of the remarks carries its own significance. Katz specifically noted that Israel is preparing for the possibility of an Iranian attack timed around the upcoming Jewish holidays, with Rosh Hashanah beginning September 11 and Yom Kippur following on September 20. He referenced Iran's history of launching attacks during Jewish holidays, pointing to strikes earlier this year during Passover as part of the broader war between the two countries. Katz said Israel's military stands ready for either outcome, stating plainly that the country is "prepared for defense and attack" and that the IDF is ready to execute whatever mission becomes necessary.

The warning didn't emerge in isolation. It came just a day after Prime Minister Netanyahu suggested that an Iranian attack on Israel would effectively be "one of their last decisions," reinforcing a united and increasingly forceful messaging strategy from Israel's top leadership. Katz's comments also echo previous statements he made back in April, when he similarly threatened to push Iran into a "Dark Age" if fighting resumed, suggesting this isn't a new position so much as a sharpened restatement of it. With both economic pressure and military tension mounting simultaneously, and with symbolically significant dates approaching on the calendar, Katz's remarks read less as a hypothetical warning and more as a direct signal that Israel considers the coming weeks a period of heightened risk.
