Bomb Rips Through Bus in Druze Suburb, Killing at Least Two

A bomb planted aboard a passenger minibus tore through the vehicle in Jaramana, a Damascus suburb home to significant Druze and Christian communities, killing at least two people and wounding more than a dozen others, Syria's Health Ministry said. Video from the scene showed the minibus gutted from the inside, its roof blown off and windows shattered, as debris littered the wet street and crowds of bystanders and first responders gathered around the wreckage. No group had claimed responsibility at the time of publication, and Syrian authorities said forensic teams were working to identify human remains found at the site.

The attack is the latest in a troubling pattern of violence targeting Syria's religious minorities and public transportation since the fall of the Assad regime in December 2024. Jaramana, which has been effectively cut off from the Druze heartland of Sweida since a government offensive there last year, has been on edge for months, with residents recently protesting over accountability for earlier violence in Sweida. The bombing follows a string of similar attacks across Damascus in recent weeks, including a blast at the Palace of Justice and twin explosions during French President Emmanuel Macron's visit to the capital, both of which authorities blamed on an ISIS-linked cell.

Syria's Foreign Minister condemned the attack and vowed that state institutions would pursue those responsible, insisting the violence would not derail the country's fragile transition. But for communities like Jaramana's Druze and Christian population, the bombing is likely to reinforce long-standing fears that Syria's new Islamist-led government cannot yet guarantee their safety. With minority neighborhoods and public transit repeatedly targeted since May, pressure is mounting on Damascus to demonstrate it can protect the very communities the international community has watched closely since Assad's fall.
