President Trump used his September 22 address to the UN General Assembly to deliver a blistering attack on Iran, accusing the regime of celebrating the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led massacre in Israel and declaring that Iran's government "slaughtered over 72,000 of its citizens this year." He went further, claiming that 10,000 people were killed recently for protesting, before warning the assembled world leaders to imagine the danger of such a regime carrying out large-scale terror attacks while shielded by nuclear weapons. The remarks came as Trump defended his administration's military campaign against Iran, which he says destroyed the country's navy, air force and missile capabilities, while holding out the possibility of a future negotiated deal.

The 72,000 figure has not been independently verified, and human rights monitors tracking Iran's crackdown on anti-government protests report far lower numbers, with tallies ranging from roughly 6,500 confirmed deaths to upper estimates near 36,500, according to rights groups and Wikipedia's running casualty count. Iran's own government has put its official death toll for the unrest at just over 3,000. The gap between Trump's claim and independently tracked figures has drawn scrutiny from fact-checkers and outlets covering the speech, even as the broader picture of a violent crackdown following Iran's economic collapse and nationwide protests since late 2025 is not in dispute. The speech marks another escalation in Trump's rhetoric toward Tehran, following months of military conflict between the two countries.
